You are not “broken”.
Have you ever felt so frustrated, and then right on cue, your internal chatter in your head kicks in (loudly) questioning, “What the heck is going on with my body?”
You have a migraine with chronic, on going fatigue, coupled with tension, tightness, or pain somewhere in your body. It has taken on a life of its own as you are dragged along for the ride as the passenger.
You have tried oh so many things, which has left you confused on what works, what doesn’t, not sure how to move forward. You try to ride out the waves of frustration and pain as you feel…
Stuck. In. The. Muck.
Frustration and confusion is not a fun game. That is for sure!
This is how it plays out, client walks into my studio…
“My ________ (head, shoulder, hip, neck - insert whatever body part) must be broken, but I know you will fix me, Julie”.
This is the phrase that makes me cringe. I have heard this phrase in many forms, unlimited times, over the course of my 22 year career specializing in migraine and chronic pain relief. Don’t get me wrong, I compassionately do ask, “how does your body feel today” and honestly really do want to know!
If you are navigating chronic pain and migraines, this is what I want to shout from the rooftops…
You are not “broken”.
Often times, it is really easy to be hyper critical of our body, especially when it feels like it is out of our control. I get it. Migraines and chronic pain impacts our lives from our friendships, at work, and even how we show up as a parent - is all impacted.
But what happens to our mindset when we refer to our body as “broken”?
We then take on the feeling of disempowerment, loose our sense of resiliency, as the fear of permanence seeps in. But most importantly we become more disconnected to ourselves.
Please hear me when I say YOU are NOT “broken”. This is what I offer to new clients when I hear them shakily refer to their body as “broken”…
You might have migraines. You might have chronic pain. But those things are not WHO you are. Let’s set migraines and chronic pain over on the shelf. You are not defined by your migraines or chronic pain. You are whole.
Let’s flip the script and wrap your body with an abundance of compassion.
What I know to be true…your body is constantly trying to communicate with you. It’s our job to lean in and listen.
That stress, pain, tightness, tension, ongoing holding patterns, fatigue, achiness, body soreness, headaches, migraines, etc. is a symptom of something bigger under the surface. And if you are willing to be brave we can start by exploring what is going on within your body as I see migraines and chronic pain as a symptom. Let’s put you back in the drivers seat and reclaim your life!
Here is a new daily check-in to ask your body, which also offers a reframe in mindset…
How do I get to honor my body today? For example, if you feel tension, would your body like to “move to loosen” by walking in nature?
What support does my body need today? For example, if you are feeling fatigued, do you need more rest in the form of a nap or turn the light out early for bed tonight?
What one, small, new habit would best serve you that you could start implementing today? For example, grab your favorite water bottle and increase your hydration by tracking your water intake.
With a curious and open mind, slowly begin to listen to what your body is sharing with you. Through this daily check-in you will begin to reconnect back to yourself as you learn the language of your body, which is the foundation to wellBEING.
This is your first step forward.
